For many years I neglected reading any Christmas or Advent devotionals. But a few years ago, I decided on a whim to pick one up and was surprised how much of a difference it made during the Advent season. Not only did it help to keep my heart fixated on what mattered most, but it also gave me something special to look forward to each morning that made December feel that much more important. It wove an even deeper layer of meaning into the holiday season.

Reading an Advent devotional with my Bible each morning helps me to shift my heart towards expectation. It also helps to shift my heart back to Christ and away from myself.

During the Christmas season, I love to watch Hallmark movies, make Christmas cookies, and decorate the tree just like anybody else. But if I’m not careful, activities filled with busyness and entertainment can also keep me focused on just one person—me. I can get caught up on focusing on the wrong thing.

So, adding a devotional to my daily Bible readings creates a space in my heart for Someone Else besides myself: Jesus. It helps me to remember that the Christmas season is not about me at all, but about taking time to marvel at the Christmas miracle we’ve been truly gifted with, our Savior.
