Christmas Nativity Ideas: 12 Unique Options for Indoor & Outdoor Decor

Every year, millions of families love to include a Christmas Nativity scene with their Christmas décor. There’s something so special about the sight of a beloved Nativity set, especially one you’ve had in your family for many years or generations.

When I was a child, my mom always let us children set up the Christmas Nativity in our home. Our Christmas Nativity encompassed about a dozen pieces, including baby Jesus in the manger, Mary, Joseph, the three Wisemen, as well a donkey and a sheep. I loved to carefully set up the holy scene atop our piano, the perfect spot in our home for our Nativity. I was a very sensitive child, and setting up these pieces somehow felt special and sacred to me each year.

As an adult today, I still love this part of Christmas decorations. The sight of a beautiful Christmas Nativity helps to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas and what Christmas is all about.

But did you know there are many creative, beautiful, and even playful ways to incorporate a Christmas Nativity set into your home or yard this year? From fragile indoor Nativity sets to outdoor Christmas Nativity scenes, there’s a perfect Nativity for every style, space, and preference. Here are 12 unique Christmas Nativity ideas to inspire you this holiday season!

Christmas Nativity Ideas: 12 Unique Options for Indoor & Outdoor Decor

INDOOR CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SETS

1. Traditional Nativity

Like the Christmas Nativity I remember as a child, a traditional Christmas Nativity scene set is a great option. It typically includes baby Jesus, Mary, Jospeh, the three wise men, shepherds, and a few animals. These timeless sets come in ceramic, wood, resin, or porcelain and can become treasured heirlooms passed down for generations.

I should note that these types of Christmas Nativity Scene Sets were exceedingly common thirty years ago, but today I can hardly find them sold anywhere! Some are sold online as “vintage”, and the majority are sold at very high prices. I’m not sure why they’re so rare and expensive today. The few cheaper options I could find were sold at Home Depot and Walmart, but they weren’t the best quality as far as I could tell. If you know another source, please drop a comment below and let me know!

2. Christmas Nativity Plate

A Christmas Nativity plate is an artistic take on a Nativity and is a great option as an alternative Christmas Nativity set. These decorative plates can be displayed on shelves, fireplace mantels, or on plate stands. Decorate plates often feature beautifully painted scenes and are perfect for small spaces or as thoughtful gifts.

3. Nativity Scene Suncatcher

Display your beautiful Nativity Scene in a window! Nativity suncatchers add color and light to your décor. These beautiful pieces can be hung in windows and allow sunlight to stream through the stained-glass design. They’re perfect if you want to include a Christmas Nativity in your space but keep it small.

4. Metal Free-standing Nativity Scene

Keep it modern in your home with a free-standing metal Christmas Nativity scene. These sleek sets are often made from wrought iron or steel and can be used on pianos, windowsills, or even in the middle of your large dining room table. Because they’re likely to be black, these alternative Christmas Nativity scenes offer a subtle and more modern look to your décor. They add an elegant touch while still keeping the focus on the spiritual message.

5. African Nativity Christmas Set

If you’re looking for a Nativity set that’s more appropriate for you, you may consider an African Nativity Christmas set. These beautiful, artisan-made pieces often come from countries like Kenya or Ghana and offer a more diverse take on the traditional scene, reminding us that the story of Christmas is for all people, all over the world.

6. Printable Nativity Sets for Kids

Looking for a fun and meaningful way to teach children about the Nativity? Try a printable Christmas Nativity Set as an indoor paper craft! Children can color, cut, and assemble the pieces themselves—making it both spiritual and engaging for young children.

There are many different options on sites like Etsy, so find the one that works best for your children, Sunday School class, and age group.

7. Christmas Nativity Painting

If you’re not looking for a traditional Christmas Nativity set, consider adding a Christmas Nativity painting to your Christmas décor this year! Adding a painting of a Christmas Nativity to your home offers a wide range of colors, sizes, and options, while allowing you to include the Christmas Nativity in your Christmas décor. Whether it’s a traditional oil painting or a modern watercolor, this is a beautiful way to honor the story of Jesus’s birth through art.

8. Nativity Christmas Cards

Even if you don’t decorate with a Nativity set, you can still share its message through Christmas Nativity cards. Look for cards that feature the manger scene, include scripture, or share a message of peace and hope.

OUTDOOR CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SETS

9. Simple Outdoor Nativity Scene

Who doesn’t love an outdoor Nativity scene? You can keep it simple with a simple nativity silhouette or a metal outline, so that you don’t have to buy all the individual pieces. Outdoor Nativity scene decorations offer a beautiful experience for the whole neighborhood, reminding neighbors and those driving by of the true meaning of Christmas.

10. Lighted Outdoor Christmas Nativity Scene

Bring your yard to life with a lighted outdoor Christmas Yard Nativity! Lighted sets range from elegant to whimsical and many are weather-resistant for long-lasting outdoor use. They’re especially magical when coordinated with other outdoor lights and they offer a beautiful way to share the story of Christmas with your neighborhood.

11. Extravagant Outdoor Nativity Set

For those who love to go all out, an extravagant Outdoor Christmas Nativity Set could become the focal point of your entire holiday display—or even your entire neighborhood! Think life-size figures, lighting, and even moving parts. Additionally, there are many different options for large outdoor Nativity sets, so spend time searching for the best one. It’s a bold and beautiful way to share your faith.

12. Peanuts Nativity Set

Who doesn’t love the Charlie Brown Christmas movie? Well, you can bring a bit of joy and nostalgia to your home with a Peanuts Christmas Nativity! Featuring beloved characters like Charlie Brown as Joseph, and Snoopy as a shepherd, this playful take is perfect for families or fans of the classic cartoon. Additionally, a Peanuts Christmas Nativity harkens to one of the most famous scenes of the film when Linus explains the true meaning of Christmas.

Don’t Forget Your Nativity Ornament!

Last but not least, you can always place a beautiful nativity ornament on your tree (or on your mantle) as a special reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

Final Thoughts

Whether you prefer a timeless Christmas Nativity, a lighted Christmas Yard Nativity, or a playful Peanuts Christmas Nativity, there are so many ways to celebrate the birth of Christ with beauty and creativity.

No matter which style you choose, adding a Christmas Nativity Set—indoor or outdoor—is a powerful way to keep the true meaning of Christmas at the heart of your Authentic Christmas celebrations!
